Impermanence

I started writing
when I learned of impermanence,
of all the things that could
be washed away by the ocean.

Once,I started building
sand castles by the shore,
it wasn't the incapacity of the sand
to hold structures in place
that scared me,

it was the wave that toppled it,
because it grew
increasingly violent
and washed away my castle.

And sometimes things,
even when they don't last,
can leave their mark
when immortalised in print.

So every time people ask me,
I tell them I write
because transient things
need to be remembered,
and too much is forgotten.
